Partnership That Works: The Girls' Show & The Wellbeing Foundation Africa

As a part of THE GIRLS' SHOW's longstanding commitment to bringing education, inspiration & encouragement as affordably as possible to young Nigerian females, TGS partnered with the Wellbeing Foundation Africa and some other internationally acclaimed organizations and personalities at the University of Lagos, at a forum tagged “The Girls' Revolution III,”the 3rd edition of our project dedicated to empowering and inspiring young women for change and success, in line with the global “1 Billion Rising” movement.

Taking place on the 19th of February 2013, “The Girls' Revolution III” was attended by over 1,000 participants, with facilitators including the former Nigerian Minister of Information and Communication, Professor Dora N. Akunyili and former Lagos State First Lady and current serving senator, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

At this event, the Wellbeing Foundation Africa empowered young women with information on violence against women and cultivated change agents by inviting those in attendance to sign a petition in support of the passage of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Bill.

Representing the Founder-President, H.E.Mrs. Toyin Saraki at the event was the Executive Director Mr. Temitayo Erogbogbo, the Wellbeing Foundation Africa encouraged all to take a strong stance against this abuse which affects girls and women around the world.

The Girls' Show, as well as The Wellbeing Foundation Africa believe that the issue of violence against women should remain at the forefront, as this challenge poses the risk of limiting young women from achieving their goals and full potential. The Wellbeing foundation did not mince words in commending the organizers of “The Girls' Revolution III,” under the leadership of Ms. Olamipeju Lawal, for their dedication to inspiring young women by improving their access to essential information and services that will motivate behavioral change geared towards success.

It was revealed at the the forum that in Nigeria over 50% of women are routinely abused by their husbands, with more than two-thirds of Nigerian women believed to experience physical, sexual and psychological abuse in their villages. The high point of the day was the receiving of over 400 names, including that of Professor Dora Akunyili, for a petition which the foundation will be presenting to the Nigerian legislature in the country’s Federal Capital Territory, in support of the passage of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Bill.

As advocacy for the elimination of violence against women continues to gain momentum, The Girls' Show in partnership with theWellbeing Foundation Africa urges all to take action and lend their voices in support of the campaign against this human rights violation.
