5 SIMPLE WAYS TO ADD VALUE TO YOURSELF AS A YOUNG WOMAN

To be valuable means to be of great importance, use, or service. As a young woman, your value determines your worth to the society and the more valuable you are, the greater the need for you. Below are 5 simple ways to add value to yourself and indirectly to our nation.

1. DO WHAT TREASURE OBASI DOES: Discover your innate skills and train yourself to be the best at it. Treasure Obasi is one young woman who has continuously harnessed her skills (with the help of her mum) as a presenter even since childhood and today she is one of the youngest award-winning presenters in Nigeria. You can do the same from now. Undergo the required training to refine your skills. The more skillful you are, the more valuable you become.

2. INCREASE YOUR EXPOSURE: You learn a few things from the comfort of your
corner, but the world is only waiting for you to take the bold step out of that corner for it to unravel all its beauty to you. How many local government areas in your state have you visited? How many states in Nigeria have you visited? How many countries in the world have you been to? You learn more through experience. Visit more places besides those places where you grew up or attended schools. Spread your tentacles. Experience more people, more cultures, more places. Expand your geographical scope. I believe this is one of the undeniable blessings of the NYSC scheme, take advantage of it.

3. BECOME A SOLUTION PROVIDER: The greater the solution you can create, the more valuable you become. You don't have to solve global warming problems to be a solution provider or feed all the hunger-stricken kids in Africa. No. Can you solve a problem for your roommate? How about your next door neighbour? You are in the better position to solve a local problem than a national or global one. Join organizations that are solving problems such as THE GIRLS SHOW and contribute your quota. Stop asking for solutions, start creating them, and people will value you more.

4. INCREASE YOUR KNOWLEDGE BASE: A reading babe is a leading babe. You can't know more than you learn, and you can't be more valuable than the knowledge you possess. So get reading. Attend seminars, conferences, symposiums like THE GIRLS REVOLUTION. You learn so much through interaction than you do by sitting alone.  Join a book club or any special interest club. Watch informative channels with a desire to learn. Have you noticed that your most valuable friends or family members are people who know a lot about a lot? Join them. The more knowledgeable you are, the more valuable you become.

5. GAIN INFLUENCE: The more people you influence, the more valuable you are. Therefore, take every available opportunity to be influential. This means you must take leadership positions as many times as possible. The most valuable person in a team is the leader, and leaders always earn more than followers. Refuse from now to always shy away from opportunities to influence others positively. Those inter-house sports, inter-class matches or inter-faculty debates will go a long way in adding value to you. Stop taking the back seat, stop being just an audience in everything. If you think you are shy about taking the stage, then you are shy at gaining influence and that means you are shy at adding value to yourself.
